Passive Fire Protection in Steel Structures: Intumescent Paint Guidelines

daumer-photo-blog

Modern commercial layouts, logistics warehouses, and high-rise towers heavily rely on structural steel frames. However, steel features a hidden vulnerability: under fire exposure, once the temperature approaches 500°C, steel rapidly loses its mechanical yield capacity, leading to structural collapse within minutes. Unprotected concrete columns suffer a similar fate as embedded reinforcement rebars degrade under extreme heat. Securing passive fire protection is a critical life-safety requirement to allow safe occupant evacuation.

The Solution: High-Build Thermal-Expanding FireX Engineering Assembly Daumer re-engineers building safety codes with a fully integrated, certified reactive shielding system:

  • The Base Layer (Corrosion Protection): To guarantee seamless adhesion of the intumescent matrix and block rust, the active zinc-phosphate based DAUFARBE TECHNISCH FIREX Z-GUARD anti-corrosive primer is applied as the foundational layer.
  • The Main Core (Intumescent Expanding Paints): The water-based formula of FIREX I-S100 detects heat spikes instantly, expanding into a thick insulating char barrier that yields critical structural intervals like R30/R60/R90. For winter projects or high-humidity regions demanding fast rapid drying times, the solvent-based reactive FIREX I-SS200 is specified. To protect concrete elements and sub-structure columns, FIREX C-100 is deployed.
  • The Protective Lock (UV & Weather Shielding): To shield the reactive intumescent layer from moisture and weathering while providing decorative options, the assembly is finalized with FIREX AP-100 topcoat.
